To ensure that you really are buying a truly organic product, look out for the Oeko-Tex certification given by the International Oeko-Tex Association. This provides reassurance that no harmful chemicals were used during manufacture that could pose a risk to your baby’s health. Alternatively, you could look for the GOTS certification. GOTS stands for Global Organic Textiles Standard.
Do I need crib bumpers?
Many parents used to use crib bumpers as a means of preventing their child getting stuck in the crib bars. However, nowadays the space between crib bars is regulated so that heads and limbs can’t get caught, so there is no safety reason to use them. However, some people still attach attractive crib bumpers because they look attractive and luxurious.
It’s true that a crib bumper could prevent your child from waking themselves up by hitting their arms or legs against the bars in the night. However, such is the risk of suffocation or strangulation from crib bumpers that the dangers far outweigh any potential benefits. Shockingly, 27 young children died as the result of suffocation or strangulation by crib bumpers between 1985 and 2005 in the USA.
Are crib tents safe for babies?
You can buy tents or drapes that cover a crib. Some create a play tent, while others drape in a similar way to the curtains on a four-poster bed. We never recommend using a crib tent on a baby crib. This is because they pose a strangulation risk. The only situation in which their use is appropriate is during play under close supervision by an adult, and the tent should be removed if the child is going to sleep.
Some parents install crib tents to prevent their child from climbing out of their cot. However, this is a very dangerous method for keeping your child in their crib. If they are able to climb out, this is a sign that it’s time to graduate into a toddler or regular bed.
Many babies love having a crib mobile to look at when they’re lying in bed, and it can be soothing for them to watch. There’s nothing wrong or dangerous about using a crib mobile as long as you attach it to the ceiling very securely, and your child cannot reach it. If you find your child is able to grab the mobile from their crib, you should remove it for safety reasons.
What furniture should I choose?
Any furniture is suitable for a baby’s room as long as it has no sharp or splintered edges which could cause an injury. You may wish to install corner guards to stop your child from hurting themselves once they’re moving around independently. Once they’re cruising or walking, any free-standing furniture should be attached to the wall to prevent it falling and seriously injuring your child. Additionally, you should child-proof any sliding drawers to prevent little fingers from getting caught.
When it comes to placing furniture, make sure that you can access the crib easily and that there is a clear path. This will prevent you or your child falling in the dark during inevitable night wakings. Ensure that any rugs are fitted with a non-slip mat and aren’t allowed to bunch up to form a trip hazard.
In addition, you may wish to purchase a nursing chair if you are planning to breastfeed your baby. These chairs have armrests and a foot stool to help you adopt a comfortable position for nursing that’s easy on your back. Having a comfortable place to nurse mean’s you’ll be much less likely to take your baby into bed with you, which is a known risk for SIDS.
When can my baby sleep with a pillow and blanket?
Although a crib totally free from bedding may look austere, it’s the safest place for your baby to sleep. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, babies shouldn’t have a pillow or blanket in their bed until they reach their first birthday.
However, there is no need to rush out and buy a pillow once your child is a year old unless they seem uncomfortable or appear keen to have one. There’s no reason a child of this age needs a pillow. In fact, it’s fine to wait until they graduate into a proper bed.
When you do eventually purchase a pillow for your little one, don’t purchase one designed for an adult. Instead, choose a small firm pillow designed with a toddler’s needs specifically in mind.
How can I reduce the risk of SIDS?
SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) is the sudden, unexplained death of a baby or young toddler. While SIDS causes understandable fear in new parents, there are some simple steps you can take when arranging your baby’s room to reduce the risk. These include:
Controlling the temperature: Overheating increases the risk of SIDS. Try to keep the room somewhere between 16-20 degrees Celsius. While this may feel chilly to an adult, it’s the safest temperature range for an infant. If you can’t keep the room cool enough, be sure to dress baby very lightly for bed. A diaper and a very low to sleep sack may be all that’s needed
Quit smoking: Exposure to tobacco smoke increases the risk of SIDS, even if your baby is only exposed to it second-hand on your clothing
Don’t bed share: Bedsharing or sleeping on a sofa or chair with your baby is a known SIDS risk. If you do want to co-sleep, ensure that you do your research and follow guidelines to keep your baby’s risk as low as possible. Make sure your baby’s sleeping area is free from pillows and quilts, and never bed share if you’ve consumed alcohol, drugs or have been smoking.
Keep the crib clear: Don’t have stuffed animals, blankets, pillows or any other soft items in bed with your baby
Back to sleep: Place your baby in their crib on their back with their feet touching the bottom of the crib. Stomach or side sleeping increases the risk of SIDS. However, once your baby is able to roll independently, although you should still put them down on their back there is no need to roll them over if they change position on their own in the night. This is because a baby with the neck strength and maturity to roll is at a decreased SIDS risk. If they can only roll from back to front, it’s a good idea to spend some time encouraging them to learn to roll from front to back as well
Firm mattress: Always put baby down to sleep on a flat, very firm mattress to sleep. This reduces the risk of their bedding enveloping their face and causing suffocation. For this reason, you should never put your baby down to sleep on a soft surface such as a bean bag, water bed or sheepskin. Some parents place new-borns in a baby swing or car seat to sleep as they sleep more soundly. However, this is an unsafe practice. The only safe place for your baby to sleep is flat on their back on a firm mattress
Breastfeed: It’s known that breastfeeding your baby reduces their risk of SIDS
Encourage Tummy Time
Although you should never place your baby on their stomach to sleep, it’s a good idea to give them plenty of time playing on their stomachs under close supervision during the day. This is known as tummy time. Tummy time helps to strengthen the muscles in your baby’s neck and back and can help reduce the risk of SIDS. This muscle strength will also help your baby to learn to roll, crawl and eventually walk. Tummy time can also help prevent flat spots developing on your baby’s head from spending all their time lying on their back. The perfect place to practise tummy time is in your baby’s crib.
Unfortunately, even though it’s good for their development many babies simply hate tummy time at first. You should never allow a baby to become distressed on their tummies. However, it’s important to persist. If your baby is very resistant, even a minute or so on their tummy is a good way to start. Over time, they will gradually get used to it. You could also distract them with toys or an eye-catching video on your phone. Some parents find their babies prefer tummy time when mommy or daddy joins at their level in the early days.
I’ve been given a beautiful baby blanket. Can I use it?
We don’t recommend using a blanket in your baby’s bed before the age of one because of the increased SIDS risk that comes with it. However, it’s common to be gifted a gorgeous baby blanket for your new arrival. Understandably, many parents don’t want this touching gift to go to waste. Instead of placing it in the crib, try using it as a pretty wall hanging or as a decorative throw in your baby’s nursing chair.

When you’re shopping for organic toddler mattresses and bedding, you could try looking for items with the Oeko-Tex label. This is awarded by the International Oeko-Tex Association, which assures you that the product has been rigorously tested to ensure it doesn’t contain any hazardous chemicals.
You may also look for mattresses and other bedding products carrying the GOTS label. This means Global Organic Textiles Standards. However, this is not used as commonly, and some popular manufacturers are yet to adopt it for their products.

• Supportive: A growing toddler needs a good level of support from their mattress. Not only is this important in terms of comfort, but it ensures their bones, muscles and joints have the support they need to grow in a healthy way. This is especially important for children with respiratory conditions such as asthma. For peace of mind, look out for products with the Certi-Pur or GREENGUARD Gold certifications. These show that the mattress has been extensively tested to ensure it emits very low levels of toxins. Alternatively, you could opt for an organic product
• Hypoallergenic: Many children suffer from allergies triggered by bedding products. For this reason, it’s a good idea to purchase hypoallergenic mattresses for toddlers
• Made in the USA: It’s a good idea to purchase a mattress that has been manufactured exclusively in the USA. This is because bedding produced in the USA has to meet strict safety guidelines which are there to protect consumers. This is especially important when you are shopping for a toddler or young child. Mattresses made in Canada are also a safe bet as they have to meet similar standards. While you can buy very cheap mattresses from overseas, they may not be manufactured to the same high safety standards
• Sleep trial: If you’re shopping for a toddler mattress online, always make sure it comes with a sleep trip. This means that you can return it at any time during the trial period for a full refund for any reason. This is especially important if you haven’t had a chance to try the mattress out before you buy so that you don’t find yourself stuck with a mattress your toddler doesn’t like and out of pocket
Where should I buy a toddler mattress?
Now that you know what makes a good toddler mattress, it’s important to know the best place to make your purchase. You have two choices: either buy it in person at a bricks-and-mortar store or buy online.
Some people prefer to buy instore as it means you can test and inspect the mattress before you commit to a purchase. This is a major advantage and means you can be sure you’re getting the product you want. However, bear in mind that you will have limited choice if you buy in a mattress store. You may also find yourself under pressure from the sales assistant to make a purchase then and there.
Buying online comes with the risk that you may be disappointed with your purchase once it arrives. However, you will have access to the whole of the market, giving you the widest range of choice possible. It’s also far easier to make comparisons online, especially if you buy through a retailer like Amazon, and there won’t be any pressure on you to commit to a
Ask many parents if they seek a connection or an attachment to their child and most would agree that they would. And attachment to our children begins literally in the womb, but once the cord is cut, the process of attachment takes on a different form. Humans are dependent on their caregivers in those first days; we have the longest childhood of any species.
Newborn babies are brand new to the world. Those first few months out of the womb (sometimes called the fourth trimester) are best spent snuggling- warm, close, and connected, taking care of baby and getting used to your new life together.
In those first few months of life, you are her everything. However, mama starts yearning to re-emerge into the world just as baby starts communicating she is ready to reach out and explore. As she grows, she depends on you to help guide her and show her everything around her.
Babywearing offers a safe space with which to begin to share the world with your baby. Mama’s body is still baby’s home base, but you are able to reach out together.
We love the four “P’s” cited in regards to newborn attachment:
How does a parent meet and respond to newborn’s needs? We would suggest yet another P: “Presence.” Presence is being aware of one’s surroundings and present in one’s environment. In order to respond to baby and meet her needs with love, rather than react, presence or mindfulness can be helpful and grounding.
Here’s a small exercise we learned at the Attachment Parenting conference to ground us in the moment: “5-5-5.” Sit or stand right where you are and notice 5 things you see; then close your eyes and notices 5 things you hear and 5 things you feel. Did you think about the shopping list or your errands or did you concentrate on those 5-5-5 things? Being able to notice those 5 things without interruption is presence.
Over the last 10 years, we’ve talked to many parents and parenting experts alike, and we would like to share a few of our favorite tools for mindful parenting that can lead parents to a joyful connection with their child.
Babywearing. Of course we’re biased on this one, but Ergobaby was founded on the principles of attachment parenting as a path to a joyful connection to our child. Wearing your baby satisfies all four of the “P’s,” while leaving you hands free to take care of yourself (don’t forget to eat lunch, mama! You need to nurture yourself too!).
Trust your instinct. You’ve got this mama. Despite the wealth of parenting advice out there, your instinct should be your guide. Take a moment to ground yourself with a 5-5-5 and listen to your gut. As you start venturing out, exploring and sharing the world with baby, remember to follow your baby’s cues and trust your instinct.
Balance. Have you ever noticed when you are sitting on an airplane during the safety speech, they advise you: “Put your safety mask first before you assist your child.” Well, that applies in everyday life as well. In order to nurture your baby and practice mindful responsive parenting, parents need to be healthy and nurtured as well.
This too shall pass. Remember, babies grow quickly and their phases of development change just as rapidly. Being able to stay focused in the present moment, rather than worrying about “what if” is a wonderful thing to remember. Trust your instinct and trust that whatever challenge you are experiencing as a parent will soon pass.
The first time my daughter had a seriously stuffy nose she was 7 months old. I tearfully panicked as she attempted to feed in the middle of the night, as was usual, and violently de-latched from my breast because she couldn’t breathe and suck at the same time. I did what any 1st time mother would do, “turn on the hot shower” I yelled, and off we went to open her nasal passages up long enough for feeding intervals.
That got us through that night, but the longer term solution involved researching and reading about humidifiers, vaporizers, nostril aspirators, saline drops, homeopathy, dietary changes, you name it! Over the counter decongestants: there is a lot of debate out there about when they are effective, the FDA says not to use under the age of 4.
Dr. Alan Greene identifies potential side effects: sleeplessness, drowsiness, irritability, increased blood pressure. We recommend speaking with your pediatrician or medical provider BEFORE purchasing any OTC. And if you have an infant with a fever of any type, contact your medical provider and discuss. Pretty much all the research agrees: moisture or humidity can soothe the symptoms of colds and stuffy noses.
Our first purchase was a vaporizer, and it worked great, except:
- incredibly difficult to clean
- the room required airing out afterwards; it produced a lot of moisture.
- mist created by boiling water, the unit itself becomes hot, so if you have a toddler that is crawling = burn risk.
- you can add essential oils into the machine (mine required to add salt).
We moved onto humidifiers a more sophisticated machine, yet also puts moisture in the air without boiling water. Some have a cool mist or a hot mist option. Moisture is moisture, and the temperature doesn’t matter. Don’t add any substance to this type of machine, just plain water.
- Sitting water can breed bacteria.
- Change the water. (Modern humidifiers like Crane’s, have smaller tanks that don’t allow water to store for more than 2 days. They also have auto shut-off in the event the water runs too low for the motor, not something my vaporizer had, and I admit to burning out more than one motor!)
- Don’t forget to change the basin! (There is a basin under the tank where water collects. Change at the same time you change the water tank. It requires that you unplug the machine, but do it, bacteria may cause other illnesses, and the whole point of using a moisture adding machine is to reduce illness and symptoms!)
As Katie Sotor of Crane-USA says, “It’s still water folks! So regardless of the machine, or if it has the anti-microbial protection, change the water every 2 days.” She also recommends disinfecting it every 7 days with a tank full of water and 2-3 caps of vinegar, don’t turn it on, just let it sit for a good 30 minutes.
Using moisture in the air while you sleep is a great non-medical option for infants, young children, and adults. So if you are pregnant or nursing and want to reduce the symptoms of a cold or reduce the potential of getting one, consider it. And saline drops in the nose whether stuffy or as a preventive can be very helpful.

Cold and Flu season is practically upon us. You may have already succumbed to the first stuffy nose of Autumn. Today we will reveal our “Sleep Reports Experts Approved” secrets on how to fight a cold. Who knows, you might even increase your probability of success in preventing a cold from attacking your home and family.
Mom’s know that colds are no fun, and they can last FOREVER! Seems like there is nothing slower than the pace of
a runny nose. And if you are pregnant, ugh! Most of the OTC medications that you may have used in the past are off limits, check with your medical provider before using any medication when pregnant. For babies and toddlers, even children, same thing, before you buy any cold medicine from the drug store, talk to your pediatrician. Dr. Greene has blogged about concerns that some OTC decongestants might not work that well on babies and children, and can pose a potential overdose risk. Read more about that here.
Below are some of our tips, and although we aren’t doctors or nurses, we share some kitchen table wisdom. Our secrets revealed – prevent a cold, cure a cold.
Tips from Moms when you have a cold:
- Rest – it’s restorative
- Chicken soup – that’s code for hydrate with: water, juice, caffeine free tea, broth. A homemade popsicle works for toddlers and kids. Increase nursing or bottle intervals with your baby. Fluids should break up mucus.
- Moisture – use a vaporizer (cold or hot mist), this is for adults and the kiddos. I wrote a cool post about this last flu season, check it here.
- Vitamin C (check doses for children with your doctor), you can take an Emergen-C pack to boost, and you mix it with water so you hydrate and add C simultaneously – Woot! Oh, and they make versions for children – Double Woot!
- Probiotics have been shown to reduce the length of a cold, and even to prevent one. Say wa?! Another blog post from Dr. Greene on the evidence supporting using probiotics to fight a cold.
- Echinacea and Homeopathics – we have zero data to support this (I’m sure there is some, but I won’t be citing any here), we tend to reach for it within the first 48 hours of symptoms and believe it helps. (For Echinacea some brands have children’s versions that are alcohol free, preggo moms can use that too. BTW, Homeopathics are FDA approved, check the packaging and even better, talk to a qualified homeopathic practitioner for suggested remedies).
- Blow you nose – tissue, nasal nettie, and the nasal aspirator for babies: get the mucus OUT before it thickens, settles in and creates an infection.
Tips from Moms to Prevent a Cold:
- Hand washing – with real soap and water, if all else fails waterless soap will do
- Probiotics – daily during Flu & Cold Season (October thru March) – Check out Dr. Greene’s blog on the topic, also hyperlinked above.
- Rest – remember, it’s restorative (this includes making sure babies and toddlers get their naps and a full night’s sleep)
