Construction

The basis of this Naturepedic Crib Mattress comes from the 150, individually wrapped coil springs. This dual-sided mattress is suitable for children and toddlers with a 100% organic cotton layer for added comfort and safety. Manufactured entirely from natural materials, parents can rest assured that this product is free from harmful phthalates, leads or fire retardants.

What’s On The Outside?

The outside of this Naturepedic crib mattress is wrapped in a seamless, cotton weave that is finished with a water-proof polyethylene outer. This outer layer meets food contact standards and is guaranteed to provide a hygienic surface for your baby’s skin.

It’s breathable and can be wiped down using cool water and a cloth. The texture is dust-mite resistant with a patent pending for the design and manufacture which, if granted, means you won’t be able to find a surface like this anywhere else.

Infants like to explore their environment. The seamless outer layer provides a smooth surface and reduces the risk of them damaging their eyes, skin or mouths on sharp seams. These seamless edges also protect the integrity of the inner materials which are commonly compromised by loose seams.

What’s On The Inside?

The inside uses 150 individually wrapped coil springs. If you’re looking for a firmer, more durable surface you can spend more on a 254 coiled version. A layer of comfort is provided by organic cotton which is produced in the US and is purchased exclusively from USDA certified sources.

This naturepedic organic cotton classic crib mattress is dual-sided which means each side has a different firmness. The infant’s side is a ultra-firm to help reduce the risk of SIDS. The other side features thicker cotton to provide a more comfortable sleeping surface for toddlers.

Extras

The edge support is enhanced by 9 gauge coil support which we’ll cover in detail later on. The materials used in production naturally reduce the risk of allergens which can be exacerbated by soybean foam or latex.

Basic Information

Trial Period

Naturepedic don’t offer a specific trial period which is a shame given the expensive nature of these mattresses. What you do get is a transparent account of the materials that go into it.

This Naturepedic organic cotton classic crib mattress is certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), an independent commission designed to reassure customers about the materials they’re investing in. They’re also registered with Bedfax which takes mattresses apart in order to list all the materials used in production.

If you’re still unsure, Naturepedic products also comply with Get Out of My Bed standards authority. That means they are made without a host of harmful chemicals, toxins or materials. You can read a full list of their banned products here.

These options show a real commitment to transparency by allowing parents to ‘look under the hood’ of their products. Unfortunately, there’s no way of telling for sure how well your baby will sleep on the surface which means there is a still a risk that you simply wouldn’t have with an established 100-night trial.

Warranty

The warranty terms and conditions are different depending on the type of mattress you invest in. A full break-down is available here. For this particular mattress parents are treated to a 10-year conditional warranty.

The conditions of the warranty are specific so here’s a few of the need to know aspects. The first is that this warranty is only valid for the original owner. If you’re purchasing second hand then the warranty is void.

The good news is that, if you have a legitimate claim, Naturepedic will replace or repair any faulty mattress. This warranty won’t cover wear-and-tear, minor imperfections nor accidental damage.

Shipping Information

As a US based product sending this back to the manufacturer is relatively simple. It’s also not vacuum packed which means you don’t have to wait for the mattress to expand to its full sizing.

Through Amazon shipping is free to the US but not available outside of the US. If you have a defective product, you can return it for free by taking advantage of Amazon’s free return policy.

Size And Pricing

The mattress is 27.8 inches wide with a length of 52”. This conforms to US standard sizing and will fit snug in any crib purchased in the US. If you have a European crib or a home-made one, it’s always worth pulling out the tape measure to make sure of a snug fit.

When we placed this mattress in our test crib we found the length-ways fit to be a tight one. There’s very little room which does mean you have to wedge it in place. The sides have space enough to fit in two fingers which comply with most size recommendations.

Natural mattresses are always more expensive than their synthetic counter-parts. The reason is that ensuring materials are organic and free from chemicals costs more. Cotton has to be grown and organic harvests tend to be less than those that use pesticides to protect crops.

With this particular product you’re paying around $100 more to get natural, organic materials. These guarantee that your child’s breathing environment is free from harmful toxins, chemicals or leads. As a customer it’s important to weigh the benefits against your budget to avoid overstretching yourself.

Firmness

This mattress is dual-sided so we’ve measured our firmness ratings separately for each side. The infant’s side is incredibly firm which we felt would provide an exceptionally safe sleeping surface for your little one.

In the early stages of life, a firm sleeping surface shouldn’t be too much of a problem in terms of comfort. They also help babies to develop the muscles they need for movement and good posture.

When we flipped the mattress we were impressed with the level of comfort it offered for toddlers. Most dual-sided mattresses tend to be on the firm side which makes it difficult for toddlers to sleep on.

We feel confident that this is truly a dual sided mattress offering firmness and safety for infants and comfort for toddlers.

Corners

The corners are squared off which reduce gaps between the corners of the crib and the mattress. Since this mattress measures 52” in length, the same as US crib standards, we did find that the corners were a little tight on our test crib. This is an undoubtedly an advantage in terms of safety but we had concerns about the lifespan of the mattress given we had to squeeze it in.

Edge Support

The two biggest advantages of opting for inner coils over memory foam are air-flow and edge support. Naturepedic go above and beyond in terms of edge support by providing reinforced edge springs.

If you have a convertible crib, edge support is essential because it means toddlers won’t slip down the side or fall off the bed if they toss and turn during the night.

When we exerted pressure we found the Naturepedic crib mattress pushed-back- which is a good sign. Overall, we were impressed by the firmness and support offered by this mattress which we felt went above and beyond our expectations for a crib mattress.

You Might Not Want To Get This Crib Mattress If!

The first thing we’d warn against is parents over stretching their finances to purchase an all-natural crib mattress. Natural mattresses are undoubtedly the safest on the market but there are cheaper, synthetic models that won’t put your child at risk.

If you’re purchasing this mattress solely to use the toddler’s, or infant’s side then you might want to shop around for a single sided crib. Memory foam tends to be more comfortable than inner spring and offers excellent support for older children.

What Makes This Crib Mattress Stand Out?

The most impressive thing about this mattress is the commitment to providing a green sleeping solution for your children. It’s fully bio-degradable which helps to protect the environment whilst also having no risk of leaking potentially harmful toxins into your child’s sleeping environment.

As a coil spring mattress this is suited best for children who sleep hot during the night. The airflow is exceptional which will help to wick away any excess heat. In addition, if you’re planning on using this on a convertible crib the superb edge support combined with supportive inner-springs will be a priceless addition to your household.

How Long Will This Mattress Last?

The warranty is guaranteed for 10 years but we don’t feel the mattress will last as long as that. A good ball-park figure would be around 5 years. This should also coincide with the time it takes before your toddler will be sleeping in a regular full-sized bed.

The issue with coil springs is that a few bad coils tend to spoil the whole bunch. Although this mattress is undoubtedly well-made we felt it would develop sagging spots after about 5 years of usage, especially with children bouncing on it.

Who’s It For?

This is a dual-side mattress which means it’s suitable for both infants and toddlers. Given the price, we’d recommend this mattress to parents with infants as it will last until your child is ready to sleep in a bed of their own.

If you have genuine concerns about toxins, chemicals or the environment then you have to invest in a natural mattress like this one. Crib mattress companies on the market today will promise natural ‘soybean’ or ‘plant oil based’ materials but these mattresses only have to have a 5 percent of natural content.

To ensure an entirely natural mattress you need to look at the certifications. Naturepedic Crib Mattress has them in abundance and guarantees a safe, toxin-free sleeping environment for your child.

Confirmed Customer Reviews

We can only learn so much from the materials and specifications of a mattress. Even when we use product samples we can only test them for a few days. To find out how this mattress fare in a practical environment we use confirmed customer reviews. These provide us with real opinions from real parents.

The Good

Parents were impressed with the US manufacture and quality of each product. It’s only one of the only legitimately natural products on the market right now. The cover is fully-waterproof and was reported as being surprisingly easy to clean and maintain.

The Bad

The difficulties parents faced with this crib mattress was mainly due to size. Length-ways it doesn’t give any leeway for shorter cribs. Squeezing a 52” mattress into a 52” crib is always going to be tough, combined with the weight of this mattress parents had a hard time removing it for cleaning purposes.

Customer Support

The customer support team is one of the best we’ve seen. You can contact them by phone, email or even make an appointment to meet them in their showroom. What we particularly liked was the support network that was available from third parties.

Naturepedic Organic Cotton Classic Crib is registered with independent agencies which means parents can cross-check facts to ensure the materials on the specs sheet match up with the materials in the mattress. We felt this was unique and a huge bonus for discerning parents.

Complaints

There were no legitimate complaints about this mattress that we found through confirmed customer reviews. Producing accountable products is at the heart of what Naturepedic do so we felt confident that, should we have a complaint, it would be dealt with appropriately.

Frequently Asked Questions

I’m Using A Wal-mart Crib Will This Mattress Fit It?

This mattress is designed to suit all US made cribs. There is a small issue with fit as it measures exactly 52”. You will have to really squeeze this mattress in and there will be some difficulty changing the mattress. The upside of a flush fit is that there will be no gaps for your child to slip into.

Is This Waterproof Or Should I Buy A Mattress Protector?

The outer layer is made from a fully-waterproof, food-grade polyethylene. That means you shouldn’t need to spend any extra on a mattress protector.

Is There Anything I Should Know About The Warranty?

The warranty lasts for a full ten years and protects you against manufacturing defects. It’s a conditional warranty and won’t cover what’s deemed as wear-and-tear or accidental damage.

Can I Return It If My Toddler Doesn’t Like It?

In the first thirty days you can return any product for a full refund as stated in US consumer law. If you’ve gone past that period you’ll have to rely on your warranty or any special guarantee offered by the seller.

Should I Buy A Convertible Crib With This Mattress?

This is a dual sided mattress featuring a softer side for toddlers to sleep on. If you already own a convertible crib then you have to purchase a dual-side mattress to get the most out of it.

Is This Hard To Clean?

Using a polyethylene surface makes cleaning a breeze. The only issue we could find was that the cover isn’t removable. Other than that, there are no problems with cleaning. Just make sure you always use cool water to prevent cracks or shrinking.
