Lucid dreaming, and why researchers care
Here the ground gets firmer, because lucid dreaming solved a problem that made dream research nearly impossible.
The problem is obvious once stated: a sleeping person cannot report what they are experiencing, and a person who wakes to report it is reconstructing from memory. Dream research was stuck with second-hand accounts.
Lucid dreaming is dreaming while aware that you are dreaming. Its scientific value is that some lucid dreamers can deliberately move their eyes while the rest of the body remains in REM atonia, and eye movements show up clearly on the electrooculogram. A pre-agreed signal, typically looking all the way left then all the way right twice in a row, produces a distinctive trace a researcher can timestamp.
That turns a dream into something with a clock on it. Researchers can mark the exact moment a dreamer began a task inside the dream and line it up against physiological recordings.
One result worth knowing
A study using this method asked lucid dreamers to visually track a moving target inside their dream, then compared their eye movements against tracking a real target while awake and against merely imagining one.
The result is genuinely surprising. Eye movements during lucid dreams showed the smooth pursuit characteristic of perception, not the jerky, saccadic pattern that waking imagination produces. Classification of the two conditions was highly accurate.
The implication: dream imagery appears to behave more like seeing than like imagining. Whatever a dream is, at the level of the visual system it is not simply vivid daydreaming.
