How We Research & Rate Sleep Products
SleepReports is an independent, research-driven publication. Below is exactly how we evaluate products and form our recommendations — and, just as importantly, what we don't do. We'd rather be useful and honest than pretend to run a lab we don't have.
Who does the research
SleepReports is run by one person, not an anonymous "team." Every review and guide is researched and written by Paul Jensen, and you'll find a byline linking to a real profile on every page.
How we research a product
Our ratings are built from evidence, not vibes. For every product we recommend, we gather and cross-reference:
- Manufacturer specifications — materials, construction, layer composition, firmness, certifications (e.g. CertiPUR-US).
- Independent and third-party lab testing where it exists, with the source linked so you can check it yourself.
- Large volumes of verified owner reviews, looking for consistent patterns rather than one-off complaints or praise.
- Reputable sleep-science and consumer sources for any health or performance claim.
What we don't do
We don't run a physical materials lab, and we don't claim hands-on sleep tests we haven't done. When a number matters — coil counts, foam density, off-gassing chemistry, temperature testing — we cite the manufacturer or an independent source and link to it, rather than inventing our own measurements. If that ever changes and we begin first-hand testing, we'll say so clearly on the relevant pages.
How we score
Each product is rated against the same consistent criteria, then combined into the overall Editor's Score you see at the top of every review:
- Support & spinal alignment
- How well a product keeps the spine neutral across sleep positions and body types.
- Pressure relief
- How effectively it cushions the shoulders, hips, and other pressure points.
- Temperature & cooling
- How well it manages heat, based on materials, construction, and owner-reported experience.
- Motion isolation
- How much movement transfers across the surface — important for couples.
- Edge support
- How stable and usable the perimeter is for sitting and sleeping.
- Value, trial & warranty
- Price relative to materials and the strength of the trial and warranty terms.
